DON’T RELY ON MAINSTREAM HEALTH INFORMATION - IT WILL LEAVE YOU BEHIND THE 8 BALL

A 9 news story shared last week (thanks Katherine Maslen!) served as a reminder about how mainstream health, media and government agencies can be years, if not decades, behind up to date research.

The news story ‘Can scented products cause health problems?’ watch here reveals ‘new concerns’ about the safety of fragranced products like candles, air freshener and incense. I’m not joking when I say that naturopaths have been talking about this for DECADES. The research is there, it has been for 15+ years, and it’s taken until 2025 for it to trickle down to mainstream medical information.
Naturopaths are constantly questioning, pushing and researching to better understand health, wellness and what we can do to reduce disease and improve livelihoods. We’re often ahead of the game (or at the very least up to date!), frequently advocating and educating about things that impact our health, well before they become the norm in mainstream medicine and media.
Whilst it still shocks me how slow this trickle of change is, this pattern is not new.
The importance of the gut microbiome in health has become more recognised in mainstream medicine over the past 10 years, whilst it’s been a foundation of naturopathy for decades. Naturopaths have long touted the importance of filtering tap water to remove chemicals and heavy metals, and it’s only been in the past year that this has been reported in mainstream media as a health concern read here.
The effect of the modern lifestyle and diet on sperm health and fertility has been a pillar of naturopathic fertility support for a long time and I’ve only noticed whispers of this information in mainstream media over the past 5 years (meanwhile sperm count has declined by approx. 1% per year for the past 40 years).
So let this be your reminder that relying on mainstream medicine and media as your only source of information will leave you behind the 8 ball. When it comes to your health, you deserve so much better than decades old information.
